Blue ArrowNEW LIBRARIAN TRAINEE JOINS STAFF - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library is pleased to welcome Mara Zonderman to its Adult Reference Staff as of December 2, 2007. Ms. Zonderman previously practiced law in Washington, D.C. and most recently was a Library Assistant at the Sayville Public Library.

Blue ArrowVISIT FROM SANTA - Children at the library's December 6, 2007 Snuggly Stories got a special treat when Santa Claus came to visit. Photos were taken with Santa and everyone received candy canes.

Blue ArrowFLUTE SWEETS & TICKLETOONS - On Thursday, November 8, 2007, children and parents were treated to a special performance of "Lamoon's Funny Tales & Fairy Tunes" by Flute Sweets & Tickletoons. Barbara Siesel and Keith Torgan entertained the audience with songs such as "The King & Queen Were Happy," "Let Me Eat Cake," "Once Upon a Time," and "Happily, Happily, Happily." This program was funded by a New York State Special Legislative Grant from Senator Dean Skelos.

Blue ArrowCELEBRATING HALLOWEEN AT THE LIBRARY - Toddlers and babies celebrated Halloween at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library at its Halloween for Tots program in the morning. In the afternoon, the library held its Annual Halloween Parade on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, with almost 50 children and parents attending to show off their costumes. Gladys the Magician, from Party Express, entertained the children with a magic show as a special treat.

Blue ArrowSTORY & SNACK - Each month, the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library presents a Story & Snack program for babies and toddlers with their parents. This popular program allows working parents, especially fathers, to participate in stories and playtime with their children at the library. On Saturday, October 13, 2007, the audience got a special treat - facepainting from Gladys the Clown from Party Express.

Blue ArrowWALDINGER CUP AWARDED TO WHEELER AVENUE SCHOOL - In 2007, Children's Librarian Suzanne Dlugolonski encouraged children to participate in the library's Summer Reading Clubs by announcing the establishment of the Waldinger Cup. The first ever winner of the Waldinger Cup is the Wheeler Avenue School. The Waldinger Cup is awarded to the school that had the most students finish the summer reading clubs each year. Fifty-six students from the Wheeler Avenue School achieved summer reading club certificates this year. Holy Name of Mary R.C. School came in second place (45 students), and the Clear Stream Avenue School came in third (35 students). The presentation of the Waldinger Cup was made to the principal, school media specialist, and other representatives of the Wheeler Avenue School on Monday, September 24, 2007, at 3:45 p.m. Students and parents from Wheeler Avenue School also attended the Waldinger Cup Award Ceremony.

Blue ArrowNEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED -Mamie Eng has been appointed to the position of Library Director of Henry Waldinger Memorial Library by the Board of Trustees of the Inc. Village of Valley Stream, effective Tuesday, August 21, 2007. She has been employed at the library on a full-time basis since 1979 as a librarian, Adult Department Head, Assistant Director, and now Library Director.

Blue ArrowCHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN RELOCATES - Children's Librarian Suzanne Dlugolonski has resigned from the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library, effective August 17, 2007. She will be relocating to Western New York and will be assuming the position of Young Adult Librarian at the Lewiston Public Library. During her two years at the library, she started several new programs for children, including Bouncing Babies, Book Buddies, The Review Crew, Checkmates, etc. She will be missed by the children and parents in the community. Librarian Trainee Jaclyn Kunz will be assuming the position as Children's Librarian and is planning programs for September 2007.

Blue ArrowLIBRARY DIRECTOR RETIRES -Marshall Botwinick, Director of the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library since February 1976, retired on June 30, 2007. During his tenure as director for 31 years, the library expanded its collection to include new media such as videos and DVDs, books on cassette and CD, music CDs, computer software, and electronic resources. The library became automated in 1996, with Internet access and an online catalog.  In 2005, the library underwent a major interior renovation, with new public spaces, carpeting, and furniture. Services expanded to include increased Children's programs, Young Adult programs, computer classes, homebound service, and an adult book discussion group. Prior to coming to Valley Stream , Mr. Botwinick served as Director of the West Hempstead Public Library and worked as a librarian at the Elmont Public Library.  He served as President of the Nassau County Library Association in 1977 and was chair of the Nassau/Suffolk Library Institute in 1976.   He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Queens College , City University of New York. A retirement dinner was held in his honor at the Pompei Ristorante in West Hempstead on June 27, 2007. Assistant Director Mamie Eng has been appointed Acting Director by the Library Board of Trustees.

Blue Arrow9TH CHILDREN'S CHALK ART SHOW -The library held its 9th Children's Chalk Art Show on Saturday, April 21, 2007, from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Almost 40children drew chalk pictures on the walkway between the library and the Village Hall. All the children received certificates of achievement, ribbons, and door prizes. Mayor Edward Cahill and Village Trustees Joanne Antun, Guido Cirenza, and Edwin Fare were present to congratulate all the children. Town of Hempstead Councilman James Darcy also honored the children with his presence.

Blue ArrowLONG ISLAND READS: The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library participated in 2007 Long Island Reads with a book discussion of The Color of Water, by James McBride, on Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Guest discussion leader Joanne Bergbom led the discussion of the book by members of the Valley Stream Book Club.

Blue Arrow9TH ANNUAL TEEN POETRY CONTEST -The library held its 9th Annual Teen Poetry Contest to celebrate National Poetry Month. Contestants were in Grades 6-12. Poem entries were original works by the contestants. Theme for this year's poetry contest was "Get a Clue @ The Library." The Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, April 20, 2007. The winners are:

3rd Place Victoria Ennab, North High School, Grade 7

Blue ArrowCELEBRATING AMERICA'S MUSICAL DIVERSITY - During the spring of 2007, the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held "Celebrating America's Musical Diversity," a series of musical programs which were partially funded by a Nassau Grant for the Arts administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. On Thursday, March 8, 2007, the Aloha Iohani Dance Troupe performed Traditional Hawaiian Hula Dance & Steel Guitar Music and taught the children in the audience how to hula. The children had a great time wearing grass skirts and learning the hula. On April 26, 2007, folksinger Alan Short performed Traditional Sea Shanties & Music from New England. The series concluded with the Shenole Latimer Quartet performing Great American Jazz on Thursday, June 28, 2007.

Blue ArrowWE THE PEOPLE BOOKSHELF GRANT - BECOMING AMERICAN - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library was awarded a 2006/2007 "We the People Bookshelf Grant - Becoming American" from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Activities for this grant included a book discussion program, an exhibit, and a bookmark contest for elementary school students. The bookmark awards ceremony was held on Monday, January 29, 2007.

Blue Arrow10TH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LEGO EXHIBIT -The library held its 10th Annual Children's Lego Exhibit in January 2007. Children of all ages are exhibiting their Lego creations for all to see. All the children receive a Certificate of Achievement for their participation.

Blue ArrowWINTER LUAU -The Children's Department held its 1st Winter Luau on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, to help beat the winter blues. Children came in wearing beach gear, grass hula skirts, and tee shirts. Everyone received sunglasses, leis, and goodies. They listened to Hawaiian music, did the limbo, made flower collages, and tropical fish picture frames. It was great fun for everyone! Aloha!
