Blue ArrowVISIT FROM SANTA - Santa Claus visited the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library's Snuggly Stories on Thursday, December 11, 2008. The children had an opportunity to talk to Santa and received a candy cane treat.

Blue ArrowANNUAL CHILDREN'S HALLOWEEN PARADE - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held its Annual Halloween Parade on Friday, October 31, 2008, with almost 50 children and parents attending to show off their costumes. The children also made Halloween finger puppets after the parade and received treat bags.

Blue ArrowENCORE VISIT FROM REPTILES ON THE MOVE - On Thursday, July 24, 2008, Marie Thompson of Reptiles On the Move made an encore visit to the library to the delight of over 40 children and adults. The highlight of the visit was Luka, the albino python snake.

Blue Arrow10TH ANNUAL TEEN POETRY NIGHT -The library held its 10th Annual Teen Poetry Contest to celebrate National Poetry Month. Contestants were from Grades 6-12. Poem entries were original works by the contestants. Theme for this year's poetry contest was "Catch the Reading Bug." The Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, April 25, 2008. Following the ceremony, YA Poet Darren Sardelli presented a poetry workshop for the teens and their families. He spoke about his poetry and getting published in several books. Then he demonstrated to the audience how to write a funny poem.

Blue ArrowLONG ISLAND READS: The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library participated in 2008 Long Island Reads with a book discussion of Aloft, by Chong-Rae Lee, on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Guest discussion leader Joanne Bergbom led the discussion of the book by members of the Valley Stream Book Club.

Blue Arrow2008 CHILDREN'S SIDEWALK ART SHOW - Although the morning started out a little overcast, the sun came out in time for the library's 2008 Children's Sidewalk Chalk Show on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Over 40 children and parents attended the show - drawing original chalk pictures outside the library and the Village Hall. All children received Certificates of Achievement, award ribbons, and a box of sidewalk chalk to take home.

Blue ArrowCONTINUING THE CELEBRATION OF AMERICA'S MUSICAL DIVERSITY - During the spring of 2008, the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held "Continuing the Celebration America's Musical Diversity," a series of musical programs which were partially funded by a Nassau Grant for the Arts administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. The first program was held on Thursday, March 6, 2008, with Lou Del Bianco presenting "Celebrate America," a family program of American folk songs, folk tales, and music. The second program was held on Thursday, May 1, 2008. Richard Stillman and Jim Byrne presented "Pecos Bill Rides the Oregon Trail." The final program was held on Thursday, June 5 , 2008, with Little Toby Walker presenting "The Blues: Telling America's Story."

Blue Arrow"REPTILES ON THE MOVE" VISITS LIBRARY - On Saturday, February 23, 2008, Reptiles On the Move presented two shows at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library. (The shows were originally scheduled for Friday, but since the library closed early due to the inclement weather, they were rescheduled for Saturday.) Marie Leighton, owner of Reptiles On the Move, fascinated the audiences of over 100 children, teens, and adults with her collection of lizards, turtles, alligators, iguanas, and snakes. This program was made possible by a special legislative grant awarded to the library courtesy of New York State Senator Dean Skelos.

Blue ArrowCHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library celebrated the Chinese New Year on Thursday, February 7, 2008, with performances by the Valley Stream South High School Cultural Society. Under the direction of their teachers, students performed the Chinese Ribbon Dance, the Chinese Lion Dance, and the Chinese Fan Dance. Another group of students demonstrated how to use the Chinese Yo-Yo. After the performances, the children had an opportunity to touch and try on the lion masks, play with the Chinese Yo-Yos, etc. It was a wonderful cultural experience for the audience. Blue ArrowYOUNG ADULT VIDEO GAMES NIGHTS - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held its first Young Adult Video Games Night on Friday, February 1, 2008. Over 25 teens took turns playing Guitar Hero and Wii Bowling, while others played board games, hung out with friends, and made new friends. Lindsay Plotkin had the highest score for Guitar Hero, and Michael Yang was the high scorer for Wii Bowling. A second Young Adult Video Games Night was held on Friday, April 18, 2008.

Blue ArrowOPEN HOUSE - The Library Board and Staff of the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library held an Open House for the community on Saturday, January 26, 2008, from 1-3 p.m. This special event featured magic shows by Terry Parrett, face painting by Andrea Colletti, story times by Children's Librarian Jaclyn Kunz, and winter crafts for the children. In the Adult Room, there was a book sale of "almost brand new" books and representatives from the Valley Stream Book Club. Two local authors - Patricia Gordon (Destined) and Thomas McShane (Stolen Masterpiece Tracker) - spoke to patrons about their books.

Blue ArrowWE THE PEOPLE BOOKSHELF GRANT - PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS - The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library was awarded a 2007/2008 "We the People Bookshelf Grant - Pursuit of Happiness " from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Activities for this grant included a book discussion program, an exhibit, and an essay contest for secondary school students.

Blue Arrow11th ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LEGO EXHIBIT -The library held its 11th Annual Children's LEGO Exhibit in January 2008. Children of all ages are exhibiting their Lego creations for all to see. All the children receive a Certificate of Achievement for their participation.
