The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library subscribes to several online resources that can help with general research or homework assignments. In some cases, you will be asked to enter your library card barcode number which is located on the reverse side of your library card. In other cases, you will be asked to enter a password, which may be obtained at the Adult Reference Desk upon presentation of your library card.

Bartleby.com is the preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students, researchers and the intellectually curious with unlimited access to books and information on the web, free of charge. The site features the Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed., American Heritage Dictionary, 4th ed., Roget's II : The New Thesaurus, American Heritage Book of English Usage, Simpson's Contemporary Quotations, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, King James Bible, Oxford Shakespeare, Gray's Anatomy, Strunk's Elements of Style, and World Factbook. It also presents the complete 70 volumes of The Harvard Classics & Shelf of Fiction.

Gale Virtual Reference Library: Datebase features a wide variety of eBook reference titles from Thomson Gale, including:

  • Contemporary Novelists
  • Contemporary Poets
  • Major 21st-Century Writers
  • Writers Directory

The Internet Public Library Online Literary Criticism Collection links to over 4,300 critical and biographical websites abouth authors and their works. There are three indexes to provide access by author, title, and nationality and literary period. There are links to critical, biographical, and "other" web sites for different authors.
Literature Resource Center from the Gale Group provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline. Combining Gale Group's core literary databases in a single online service, the Literature Resource Center covers more than 120,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,500 of the most-studied authors.

LitFinder gives access to various literature databases, including PoemFinder, StoryFinder, and Essay Finder.

MagillOnLiterature Plus is the definitive online source for editorially reviewed critical analyses and brief plot summaries of the most studied works in the history of literature, combining MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors. The information in this database equals the complete contents of 31 sets of reference books, including nearly 20 Masterplots and Masterplots II titles, the Cyclopedia of World Authors, the Cyclopedia of Literary Characters, and 10 years of Magill's Literary Annuals and Magill Book Reviews, compiled by Salem Press.

NoveList is a reader's advisory database that allows readers to locate authors and titles of interest. Users can browse theme-oriented book lists at every reading level through Explore Fiction and look for outstanding titles in Best Fiction. Many title records have direct links to Web sites with information about the author or teacher resource materials. Besides locating books to read, users can learn more about books and authors through Feature Articles, Book Discussion Guides, and BookTalks.

Twayne's Author Series by Gale features the content of nearly 600 books that comprise three print series - United States Authors, English Authors and World Authors. This series is devoted to literary critical interpretation and discussion for readers ranging from high school students through college and above. It is offered to patrons through NOVEL, the New York State Statewide Database Project.

American Verse Project is a collaboration between the University of Michigan Press and the Humanities Text Initiative to compile "an electronic archive of volumes of American poetry prior to 1920." Most of the archive is made up of 19th century poetry, although some poems from the 18th and 20th centuries are included.
BookMuse.com offers guidance for book clubs. Muse Notes includes a wealth of information, including story synopses, discussion questions, and authors' biographies.
Fantastic Fiction includes bibliographies for over 7000 authors, information on over 140,000 books, with latest titles and author pages.
Horror World contains forums for fans of dark fantasy and horror, links to publishers and major presses of horror books, and a book review database.  
Horror Writers Association's website promotes the interests of writers of horror and dark fantasy and encourages interest in good horror fiction with reading lists, links, and lists of award winner authors.  
Louisiana State University Libraries Author & Literature Website is an index of indexes. It includes links to individual author guides and other documents that deal with specific writers.
Modern American Poetry is a multimedia companion to the Anthology of Modern American Poetry. It contains comprehensive information about American poets as well as in-depth analyses of their works. 
The Mystery Reader, developed by D.N. Anderson, focuses on the literary aspect of mystery and crime fiction, including publishing news, author updates, and reviews. It offers ratings and reviews in six mystery subgenres: detective, historical, romantic, suspense, thrillers, and cozy. 

Oprah's Book Club site includes descriptions of selections, along with reading group questions. 

The Poetry Archives includes more than 3,700 poems from some favorite poets, such as Charlotte Bronte to William Butler. It also includes a discussion forum for literary enthusiasts. 
Reader's Robot is a reader's advisory service covering 21 genres, compiled by a Canadian librarian. Readers can search the databases using "appeal factors" and can create Instant Reading Lists.
The SF Site emphasizes the literary aspects of the science fiction and fantasy genres, with book reviews and links to author web pages. There is an Authors index that is the web's "most comprehensive directory" of sf, fantasy, and horror writers on the web. 
Sparknotes contains guides on authors and their works, written exclusively by Harvard students and recent graduates.
